Getting started with a VR firefighting simulator

Start with what participants need to learn. Choosing a VR simulator package is easier when organizational needs, teaching methods and the intended scope of use are clear.

The proMixed team

Define the audience and objective

An induction safety day, refresher training and emergency team practice serve different needs. Choose a focused objective, such as recognising hazards or reviewing decisions. Identify participants’ roles and prior knowledge so the exercise has a clear purpose beyond trying a headset.

Agree the scope of use

Decide whether you need a one-off activity or training within an ongoing programme. For a quote, provide estimated participant numbers, training stations, intended period of use and required environments. The proposal should identify the content, equipment, guidance and customization included, together with the organization’s responsibilities.

Prepare the equipment and space

Confirm the headsets and controllers, space requirements and responsibility for setting up and supervising the session. Allow time for orientation and participant comfort. The proposed configuration, including use of Meta Quest 3 or 3S and any supplied equipment, should be confirmed in the quote.

Plan an initial session

A small first group can help you assess the briefing, session flow and time needed per participant. Review those observations before expanding the activity, and adjust the implementation plan to the intended scale.
